It's the season for hairy crabs @ the Mandarin Oriental

The first time I had hairy crabs was years ago and it was only to make me wonder what the fuzz was all about. Why pay so much for these crabs when the alaskan king crab or the filipino alimango are so much easier to eat and with more flesh? Well, the hairy crabs that I had at the Clipper Lounge of the Mandarin made me re-think my position. The secret is this: when normally we would opt for female crabs, in the case of these hairy ones from Shanghai, we've got to get male!

The fat of the male crabs is so rich in flavor. Don't be deterred by the sticky constituency. Get some black vinegar and suck into these males. To die for ... literally ... I dare not even consider the cholesterol.

The Clipper Lounge's buffet is all about seafood and is quite reasonable considering what you get for around HK500 which includes one hairy crab per person. Additional hairy crabs at HK100 a pop. But, I really think that if your health is important to you, one should be enough!!!
